Beloved author John Green has been open about his struggles with his personal mental health, and he’s talking again as his latest book, Turtles All the Way Down, is released.
*Green wrote the beloved book The Fault In Our Stars, and he’s been open about his struggles with depression, OCD and anxiety, which have plagued him throughout his life. With Turtles, one of the main characters is also plagued with mental illness, and as Green told The Mighty, “This is my first attempt to write directly about the kind of mental illness that has affected my life since childhood, so while the story is fictional, it is also quite personal.”
*The New York Times reports that Green battles his mental health demons with the help of cognitive behavioral therapy. Green sought the help of a psychiatrist, and he thanks his doctors in his latest book, but people suffering from the kind of depression and mental problems Green has faced can also seek help through mental health treatment centers that can cater to mens and womens unique mental and psychological struggles.
*And there is indeed a lot of hope that people as high profile as Green can encourage more to seek help. Recently Green tweeted, “Like millions of others, I take medication to help treat my mental illness. Treating chronic medical conditions must not be stigmatized.”
