Solution Focused Brief Therapy

When moving on from past mistakes and struggles, it’s always important to talk about the causes, as well as the effects they have had on your life. But if you dwell on them too much, you may never be able to leave your past behind.

This is why, we at Merito would like to present the option of talking about your future instead, with our solution focused brief therapy. Take it from the name itself – with this therapy, we’d like to hear more about the solutions you have in mind. Instead of discussing what’s happened previously, we’d like to talk to you more about what you want to do next, as well as the little things you’ve already done to help make this a reality.

How Does It Work?

Solution focused brief therapy involves a lot of conversation, but with a slightly different twist: instead of talking about your past, we ask you to talk about your future. Through these conversations, we hope to help you bring your personal goals and aspirations into sharp focus. We want to know how you feel about your past, but we’re more driven to ask you how you want to change your future.

Here are the types of questions you can expect to answer:

  • Coping Questions. These questions are designed to ask you about how you are currently dealing with things, even as you go through your daily struggles. While we recognize that your problems exist, we must also recognize that you’ve been working hard to overcome these on your own.  How are you dealing with your life, in spite of your problems?  What do you do to get through every day? By answering these questions, we hope to help you see that, while these problems have dealt you a significant blow, you’ve also done something important by going on in the face of these odds.
  • Miracle Questions. These are scenario-based questions, where we ask you to envision a miracle, in which your problems have disappeared, allowing you to live a completely different life. How differently would you be behaving, now that your problem is gone?  What will you change in your daily routine, now that you’re free to do so? By imagining a miracle where none of your past has happened, you can imagine a more concrete vision of the path you want your future to take.  With that in mind, you can already begin to work towards it to make sure it doesn’t stay a miracle vision.
  • Scaling Questions. These types of questions are answerable from a scale of 0 to 10, where we ask you about your progress, and you answer by giving a concrete rating from that scale. With these questions, we let you self-evaluate your progress.

How Can These Help You?

  • Gain a better image about yourself. By slowly answering our questions, we hope that you will be able to see yourself in a newer, better light.
  • Become enabled to properly evaluate yourself. Solution focused brief therapy gives you the means to be able to track yourself and your progress in concrete ways. By evaluating yourself this way, you will be able to see how far you’ve come and how far you have left to go – all without losing sight of your original goal.
  • Attain a better perspective about your life now to prepare yourself for a better future. Ultimately, solution focused brief therapy will give you a chance to regroup and get your life back in order. Acknowledge your past, talk about your present struggles, and discuss the steps you plan to take – until finally, your ideal future will become a reality.

At Merito, we’d like to help you understand that, while dwelling on your problems is a normal thing, acting on them is a much more effective solution. But it’s equally important to focus on the things you’ve already done for yourself to create a better future. We at Merito believe that no step is too little, as long as you’re moving closer to your goal. Come see us today and let us help you take that next step with confidence.

“It is not a shame to be knocked down by other people. The important thing is to ask when you’re being knocked down, ‘why am I being knocked down?’ If a person can reflect in this way, then there is hope for this person.”
